The importance of preparing HVAC systems for winter

Fall is here – the ideal time to remind homeowners to have their HVAC systems checked so they’re ready for the cooler temperatures ahead. Here’s a five-step HVAC checklist dealers can use to help their customers prepare for winter.

The middle of winter is the worst time for your customers to discover their heating system isn’t working or their boiler has suddenly stopped running. Encouraging them to prepare ahead can help prevent such problems from occurring when having a functioning HVAC system is needed most.

Here’s a handy checklist to share with customers to ensure their HVAC systems are kept in top running order:

1. Book an inspection

It’s a good idea to advise homeowners to book an inspection of their HVAC system twice a year, in the spring and fall. This will allow sufficient time to fix any issues before the heat of summer and the cold of winter to help avoid potential emergency calls when demand is high.

2. Clean air filters

A dirty or clogged air filter can make a system work harder and less efficiently. Homeowners should be advised to schedule routine visits from an HVAC professional to clean or replace their air filters and check them on their own every month.

3. Use a smart thermostat

Recommending a smart thermostat will enable homeowners to automatically adjust their home’s heating and cooling system for optimal performance. This can provide them with potential savings on energy costs. Plus, because smart thermostats are Wi-Fi enabled, they can be controlled remotely. Recommend ones with the U.S. government-backed ENERGY STAR certification.1

4. Conduct maintenance and repairs

The average homeowner spends $1,900 a year on energy bills, with nearly half going to heating and cooling costs.2 Reinforce the importance of ensuring their HVAC equipment is kept in optimum condition through routine inspections and maintenance. This can help reduce their overall energy expenses and prevent potential problems.

5. Replace older equipment

Not only can older equipment require costly repairs, but it may also be less energy efficient. Advise your customers to replace furnaces or boilers that are more than 15 years old and air conditioners or heat pumps more than 10 years old.3

Through regularly scheduled HVAC system inspections, maintenance, and support, you can help ensure your customer’s homes remain comfortable year-round.
