Boating is a common pastime in the U.S., but there are a few states where this activity is particularly popular. If your dealership is located in one of these three states, offering a financing program that meets their needs can help them make a boat purchase you can both be happy about.
Here are three of the top boating states in the nation:
Florida leads the states in boat registrations, boasting 905,298 registered motorboats in 2016, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Most who know the landscape of Florida won't be surprised by this statistic; the Sunshine State has more than 8,000 miles of coastline, second in the nation only to Alaska, according to WorldAtlas.
Florida also takes the top spot for most boat sales in 2016, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Floridians spent $2.5 billion on powerboats, engines, trailers and accessories.
According to Visit Florida, the state's history of boating can be traced back to Spanish explorers, perhaps making it one of the state's oldest pastimes. Though the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico are easily accessible from many areas in the state, the options don't stop there. Fort Lauderdale, sometimes called the Venice of America, has more than 300 miles of inland waterways to traverse.
Minnesota may not have as much coastline as Florida, but it's called the Land of 10,000 Lakes for a reason. In reality, Minnesota has more than 11,000 lakes, and that's just counting the ones that are 10 or more acres large, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Additionally, the state has 6,564 rivers and streams.
Given this abundance of explorable water, it makes sense that Minnesota would come in No. 2 for most boat registrations; there were 817,560 in 2016, according to the Coast Guard. Minnesotans were also in the top 5 states of boat-related spending. Sales for powerboats, engines, trailers and other accessories totaled $710 million in 2016, the fourth in the country, according to NMMA.
Coming in third for boat registrations with 794,137 is Michigan. Michigan borders four of the five great lakes, contributing to the state's impressive 3,224 miles of coastline - the ninth longest in the country, according to WorldAtlas.
In fact, no matter where you are in the state, you're always about 6 miles away from the nearest body of water, and no more than 85 miles away from one of the great lakes, MLive reported, making boating a favored activity for Michiganders. Residents take advantage of the easy access to many miles of fresh water. In 2016, they spent $868 million on powerboats, engines, trailers and accessories, according to NMMA.
